The ENGAGE Initiative

Summary

The ENGAGE (Engaging Research with e-Infrastructure) project is a JISC funded initiative involving the Universities of Southampton, Edinburgh and Manchester (represented by OMII-UK) and the National Grid Service (principally represented by the STFC through Rutherford-Appleton Laboratories and Daresbury Laboratories). This will build on the work carried out by the Study of User Priorities for e-Infrastructure for e-Research (SUPER) survey.

The aims of the ENGAGE project are to promote the greater engagement of academic researchers in the UK with the UK's e-Infrastructure. The first part of the project will involve a set of interviews of UK academics in conjunction with the e-IUS and e-Uptake projects. As a major part of the second part of the project, a set of best practice information distilled from these interviews will be disseminated through this website and used to promote ongoing discussion. It is funded initially for two years, and the expectation is that this website will be continued by OMII-UK and the NGS as an entry gateway for researchers seeking information on how to engage with the UK's e-Infrastructure providers. The third part of the project will involve the creation and deployment of a small set of domain focused systems which enable a new set of academics to utilise e-Infrastructure in pursuit of their research results.

The following information sheet outlines the purpose and intent of the three Community Engagement and Support projects funded under the JISC e-Infrastructure programme - Participant Information Sheet. Information about the e-IUS and e-Uptake projects is available from the above tabbed menu bar.

Project Aims

The aims of the ENGAGE project are as follows:

    • Engage with lapsed and potential new users of e-Infrastructure
    • Conduct a wider analysis of e-Research technical requirements
    • Empower researchers to exploit benefits of available e-Infrastructure through:
      • Determining detailed requirements for specific research projects
      • Designing possible solutions in conjunction with research communities
      • Integrating software and developing tools to address identified requirements
    • Delivering and deploying new software solutions on NGS infrastructure
    • Build new capacity in NGS and OMII-UK to better deliver future e-Research solutions
